Did you know
that there is more than one arch in the skeletal construction of
the foot? The longitudinal medial arch, the one we all think of
as the arch, aids in weight bearing. On the opposite side of the
foot is another small arch. The transverse arch is in the forefoot
where the metatarsal bones meet the upper part of the foot. The
transverse arch flexes when the foot is moving through natural phases
of pronation and supination in the gait cycle.
